What is the Little Dragons Karate Program?
3-4 year olds love physical activity and anything involving play. They have a rich imagination and strong desire to be less dependent on their usual caregivers. The problem is that many children this age have a hard time with structure in the group environment that is commonly found in most Martial Arts schools. The solution is to provide them with their own program that targets their stage of development in a manner that keeps them entertained, while at the same time building skills that set them up for success. Our structured program introducing early skill-based training in Martial Arts has proven to be very successful.
Here’s how the program works
By understanding the stages of development of 3-4 year olds, we selected 8 age-appropriate skills that make up the Little Dragons Program:Stepping, Crawling, Blocking, Running, Hopping/Jumping, Catching, Kicking and Punching. We cover one of the above skills per class. During each class, we run a warm-up, deliver a mat chat about the skill, run two or three skill-building drills, and then we have them demonstrate the skill to earn their skill-stripe. They must earn 8 skill-stripes in order to graduate to the next belt level.
The instructors have made an extremely positive impact on our son’s life. They refer often to how the skills being taught in karate are applicable in life outside the studio. Numerous times throughout a week at home, someone in our family is quoting something that was taught or discussed at karate and how it can help us in our daily lives. Each instructor has taken a genuine interest in my son, and makes him feel valued and capable. I have also been impressed with how the instructors deal with students who are having a challenging day—always with kindness and clear expectations. One of my favorite things about Atlanta Kick is the balance they have struck between high expectations, skill instruction, and fun.Sabrina Manns
